All Natural Weight Loss

Drop of Water

It seems as though everyone is looking for diet pills that work.  However, diet pills aren’t really what a body needs to lose weight and we all know it.  These pills and supplements are full of things such as caffeine which are not great for the body although they may artificially increase energy in the short term.  In the long term, these products just won’t get you the results you’re after.  All they will do is waste precious resources and pump more chemicals into our systems and our planet.

So, how do you lose weight naturally??  It’s all got to start with water.  People are meant to drink much more water than we currently do.  Just regular plain old tap water in a reusable water bottle will do.  There’s absolutely no reason to buy bottled water.  In fact, all of these used plastic bottles are damaging our planet and using up resources that cannot be replaced.

Adults should drink 8-10 glasses of plain water a day to help maintain or achieve a healthy weight.  You really shouldn’t get thirsty at all.  That’s your body’s way of telling you that it is being deprived of water.  When I say “plain water”, I mean just that.  Not juice, not tea, not water sweetened with artificial products.  Just water, straight from the tap.  Most western countries have extremely clean drinking water coming directly into their home.

Try keeping a bottle (reusable of course) of water with you at all times and try to fill it at least 8 times throughout the day.  I guarantee you that you’ll feel and see a difference.  It will also help give you the added energy to put more exercise into your daily routine.  Remember that 30 minutes to 1 hour of daily activity is the recommended minimum.  It doesn’t need to happen all at once though.  Try 5 ten minute bursts.  Add in some fresh organic, local produce and you are on your way!

DIY Cheap & Eco-Friendly Acne Scar Removal

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Lemon JuiceAcne can causes scars that last a lifetime.  Luckily, it doesn’t have to.  You can have blemish free skin that is also scar free and all it takes is a little DIY elbow grease and some organic ingredients.  Unfortunately, many people are unaware of this and resort to expensive and chemical laden treatments to remove acne scars.  Even laser surgery is resorted to by many!  Anything that involves surgery definitely needs to be used as a last resort!  Try one of these 3 ideas instead:

1.  Lemon or Lime juice:  Squeeze some fresh organic lemon or lime juice onto a cotton ball.  Dab the juice onto any noticeable acne scars generously and let it sit for 2 to three minutes.  Rinse off with cool water and dab dry with a towel.  Do this daily for a couple of weeks at least to see if your scars start to diminish.

2.  Olive Oil:  That’s right — good old olive oil.  Use organic extra virgin olive oil for the best results for both your skin and the planet!  Massage the oil directly onto your entire face with your fingertips.  The olive oil will help to remove dead skin cells which is exactly what the acne scars are made of!

3.  Ginger Slices:  Cut up fresh organic ginger into slices.  Press a slice onto the acne scar that you are hoping to remove and leave it in place for 15 minutes or so.  This would probably be easiest to do while watching television so you don’t get toooo bored!  Do this to all effected areas of the face each night before bed and you should notice some significant results in one week.

Organic Farm Summer Interns

Right now is the time of year that students start to find a job.  Those of us who are eco-aware might have a tougher job search than some of the other students who are sending out resumes by the dozens.  Luckily, there are lots of green work opportunities if you know where to look.  Everyday, more and more green search engines are formed with the intent of helping those of us attaining an eco-friendly lifestyle.  I was able to find several green job search engines without even really trying and they really had a range of great job opportunities for the summer.  There is everything from organic farming jobs to greenhouses to business jobs available at companies that work very hard to be more sustainable.  Don’t give up hope…that eco-friendly summer job that you’re looking for may be just around the corner!

Green Up Your Fashion with Alex and Ani

Alex and Ani Headband

All you green-chic fashionistas out there absolutely have to check out Alex and Ani.  I’ve heard of them before but never bothered really checking it out.  Big mistake!  They’ve got a huge range of eco-friendly accessories — necklaces, earrings, bracelets and hair stuff.  I’m particularly in love with this feather headband.  I’ve got to admit that it’s not the green-est of their items.  It is made with feathers of non-endangered birds though and many of their other items are of a more dark green variety — recycled metal seems fairly popular as a material of choice for them.  It’s great to support any level of green-ness in companies though.

Organic Girl has a giveaway in conjunction with Alex and Ani right now that gives readers the chance to win a triple bracelet.  Definitely worth checking out and entering as are many of her fantastic contests!  Not that I need more competition….

Farm To Fork Eco-Resort

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Ever wonder how the rich like to vacation??  Apparently a Richard Branson vacation package includes riding a tractor while he sets up a new eco-resort in NJ for everyone to enjoy.  Richard Branson is known for being outrageously green with his forays into using bio-diesel to fly aircraft from his Virgin line, carbon capture programs and eco-resorts on Caribbean islands, Africa and Morocco.

His project in New Jersey involves literally farming the land and feeding it directly to customers.  Students from culinary programs at Rutgers and Sterling College have helped to set up a huge sustainable agricultural operation on the grounds of a 100 year old farm.  There are animals, organic gardens, a spa, hotel, fitness center and guest cabins all arranged throughout the eco-resort named Natirar that is located in Raritan, NJ.

Branson is the latest owner of the property and he sure knows a thing or two about setting up green living resorts after his many past experiences with eco-resort developments throughout the world.  This latest farm to fork program takes local, fresh and sustainable eating to it’s logical extreme of going to where the food comes from to eat it.  Sounds delicious and if you check out the pictures of the resort online, you’ll discover the beauty of it too!

Spring Seedlings

Herb Seedlings

Now is definitely time to get those seeds planted if you haven’t already.  Herbs can easily be started from seed indoors and planted outdoors when the weather is more co-operative.  Many herbs such as basil, thyme, dill and sage can be started in early spring and then moved.  This way even those without much money on hand to spend on gardening can end up with a beautiful and very usable herb garden come summer.  No money for seeds even??  Check out this Seed Sharing site.  They will send you seeds that you request  and that they have on hand in return for you sending them some seeds that you have.

In this way, you can get quite the variety of herb, flower and even vegetable seeds for free!!  Just remember to save some seeds that you have on hand to add to their seed bank.  Pretty cool idea if you ask me!!

Get out there and get your hands dirty.  Gardening is about fun and fresh, organic, home grown produce!  Happy gardening all.

Pure Fun Organic Candy

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Mmmmmm…..candy!  Everything in moderation, right?  Even candy is often full of weird chemicals and unpronounceable ingredients though.  What does that mean for the health of the planet and the health of your body to consume that?

Check out Pure Fun if you’re concerned.  They’ve got quite a selection of certified organic candies including cotton candy (my favorite), candy canes, lollipops, chocolates, mints and hard candies.  They have ingredient lists that you can actually understand — amazing!  For example, their cotton candy contains organic evaporated cane juice.  This is a whole food — only the water is removed.  The organic evaporated cane juice retains all of it’s natural vitamins and minerals.  Yes, candy with vitamins!  lol  They also use all natural colors and flavors.

So, what is this stuff missing?  It has no: glutens, pesticides, GMO’s, artificial flavors, dyes, synthetics, preservatives, dairy, casein and no FD&C colors.  So, what’s left then??  Nothing but Pure fun!  Great idea.  I can’t wait to try it — I’ll call it research!

Benefits of Eating Real Food

Psyllium Husks

Greasy Saucy Hamburger

If you are more familiar to the picture on the right than the picture on the left, you may have a serious problem!

The picture on the right is a homemade burger which, in moderation, isn’t all that bad provided it is not dripping with huge amounts of sauce and grease as shown in the picture.
The picture on the left is an image of a common ingredient in most colon cleanser products — psyllium husks.  Not that you need to buy a commercial or chemical laden colon cleanser.  The trick is simply to eat whole, natural, real foods.  It does not have to be as time consuming or costly as you might think to begin adding some organic and unprocessed products to your diet.
One of the keys to losing weight or staying slim (and having a clean colon) is to consume fiber.  Psyllium is a great source of fiber because it absorbs water and plumps up.  It also absorbs toxins from your colon along the way helping to keep your system free of dangerous toxins.
Another huge advantage to eating right is having both a healthy body and a healthy planet.  When you eat correctly you aren’t as hungry so you eat less.  This means less extra fat and calories in your body and less wasted resources for the planet.
Because you are eating right, you body will be much healthier.  You will have a slimmer waistline, a cleaned out system and the energy you need to get you through the day.  All of that without chemicals!
Start slowly by adding one new or all natural food a week.  Work slowly to integrate these new things into your diet and your lifestyle.  There are many websites where you can find recipes to use almost any ingredient you can come up with — even sites that have fast, family recipes!  Get in there and start cooking!!

DIY Natural Acne Treatments With Only 1 Ingredient

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010
Egg in Cracked Shell

Some of the  best acne treatments have exactly the same problems that I discussed in another post about wrinkle creams.  That is that they are full of chemicals that can be leached into the body through the skin.  Also, these products eventually end up in landfills and down drains to pollute both our earth and water.  This spells trouble for both the health of your body and the health of your planet.

Fortunately, there are many natural options that are chemical free on the market and that are easy to make at home yourself.  There are a ton of all natural, easy to make recipes available online that contain common and cost effective ingredients that won’t harm your body or the earth.

There are two different acne treatments that are made solely of eggs (organic free range eggs are the most environmentally friendly choice).  The egg white can be whisked and smoothed onto the face to tighten skin and eliminate red spots associated with acne.  Use 2 – 3 egg whites, whisk until frothy, apply to face and let it sit for approximately 20 minutes.  Rinse with warm water and voila!

Now I’m sure you’re wondering what to do with all the yolks, right?  Well, fortunately egg yolks contain Vitamin A which can really help to decrease scarring.  The process is exactly the same as the previous egg mask — whisk the yolk, apply to face and let sit for 20 minutes.  When the timer goes, rinse your face with warm water!
