So, how exactly is a dehumidifier an eco-friendly enhancement to your home?  Well first of all, ensure that you buy an energy efficient model of dehumidifier.  These can be easily identified by their Energy Star seals of approval or by comparing the energy usage levels on different models.  Energy star appliances use 10-20% less energy than models that are not energy efficient.  This can be enough energy saved over the course of a year to power your refrigerator for six months! When you remove the moisture from your home, you remove the potential for mold and bacteria growth.  This means a couple things that are great for the people in the home and the planet on which the house is situated.  The occupants of the home will get sick less often, have fewer asthma attacks, get less colds and infections.  This makes for happier people and less drugs being used.  Medications are commonly disposed of improperly in landfills instead of being returned to pharmacies for safe disposal.  If it’s in the landfill, the drugs are going to get into the soil and the groundwater beneath it.

Another great thing about less mold and bacteria is less cleaning.  That also means that less chemicals will be used in the home!  Which also leads to less illness and cleaner air.  Now you’re starting to see the circle effect happening of one good thing leading to another to another and back again.

I would definitely consider installing a dehumidifer into homes that are in humid climates.  It will preserve the life of your home, your family and your earth!
