Spring into the Backyard!

By Paula | Filed in Uncategorized

Murray Feiss Outdoor LightingI absolutely love this time of year!!  Relaxing on the deck.  Outdoor barbecues.  Watching the kids play in the backyard.  It’s the perfect time of year for a little backyard renovation.  One of the easiest (and most cost effective) ways to change the look of a space is to change the lighting.  Check out the line of Murray Feiss lighting to see the huge array of styles available.

One of my favorites is definitely this hanging lantern from Murray Feiss.  It would fit perfectly into our backyard decor.  I love the clean lines giving it a very mission style while at the same time bringing in the feel of the Orient with the almost pagoda like shape of the lantern itself.  The patina of the lantern would look beautiful in any setting — it’s not to bright or too dull.  Lit up in the evenings it would give a soft romantic glow to any outdoor oasis.

What’s the point in saving the environment if you don’t get out there to enjoy it, right?? lol  Don’t forget to use CFL or even better, LED bulbs in your outdoor lighting too to cut your power consumption.  It’s amazing what a difference simply changing all of the bulbs in lighting both indoors and outdoors can do to cut back on bills and power usage.  If you can’t afford much of a make-over on your backyard this year but want to make a big difference, work on the lighting first and then the garden.  Even a small space can have a huge change with the right choice of lights and some flowers and veggies planted in pots throughout the space.

Day 45 of the Oil Spill

By Paula | Filed in Uncategorized

BP LogoIt’s day 45 of oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico.  The oil sheen can be seen for miles and miles away not just on the surface of the water but also on the beaches and in the marshes.  It’s killing birds and fish in untold numbers.  The blast itself killed 11 men.  Local fishers and businesses are fighting to stay financially viable.  And what does the BP CEO say??  He “wants his life back”.  Wow.

I don’t even know where to begin.  They cheaped out on safety equipment on the oil rig.  They ignored safety warnings saying that something was going wrong.  When it did blow, they didn’t send condolences to the families of the men who actually lost their lives.  They out and out lied about the amount of oil being leaked and about the seriousness of the issue.  They say they are going to reimburse everyone for the lack of money coming in and have paid only a fraction of what is owed.  They are not effectively cleaning up the oil or stopping the leak.  Yet, this same CEO says that the oil containment has been a huge “success”.

Today marks another day of BP trying to cover their own behinds as more and more oil spills.  Their attempts at cutting off the pipe with the diamond blade saw have failed.  Now they have resorted to using snippers to cut the pipe as evenly as possible and using a “top hat” to try to cap the pipe and divert as much oil as possible to containment units.  No one is sure that this will work.  What’s the next plan??

Waiting for the relief wells to reach the line which won’t happen until August.  And no one is 100% sure that will even be effective at capping the leaking oil.  The devastation this has caused not only for the area but for the entire environment is unspeakable.  Someone really needs to try to get that through to the BP execs.  It’s not all about them, their own personal lives or even money.  It’s about the planet and the damage that they have done to it all because of our society’s over-reliance on oil.  Hopefully there won’t be a day 46 of this catastrophe.

The Vacation All Kids Beg For…

I know that my preschooler is not the only one who is begging for her parent’s to plan a Disney themed getaway.  The funny part is that we took her two years ago — unfortunately, she doesn’t really remember it at all!  I know that Disney is in our vacation future within the next couple of years for sure.

Now, like so many other parents, I’ve begun looking at Disney vacation packages.  What most parent’s first question is Disneyland in California or Disneyworld in Florida?  My first train of thought, of course, goes to how I can make even a Disney trip a more eco-friendly experience.  There is always carbon offset credits that can be purchased to make up for flying.  And there are tons and tons of more environmentally friendly hotels that are available in both Orlando and Anaheim.  All you really have to do is look.

One of the most important considerations when looking for a green-er hotel is water consumption.  Hotels can easily reduce their water usage simply by not changing sheets and towels every single day in every single room.  These linens really only need to be changed at the guest’s request.  This simple act of putting out a card (all recycled content of course) that ways you want the sheets changed on the bed can make a huge difference when you are looking at dozens and dozens of rooms.

Hotels can also reduce their water consumption by having dual flush toilets installed in all guests rooms, low-flow shower heads and water efficient washing machines for laundry.  It’s amazing how these little things done over and over again each and every day can add up to a huge savings of water, energy and money!

I’m off to research hotel water consumption rates in Orlando now.  Don’t tell my kids!!  lol

Bamboo Solar Powered Radio DesignDesign students always seem to be at the cutting edge of both design and technology.  Lucky for the world, many of these design students also have a huge concern for the planet around them and the people in it.  Check out this fantastic and innovative design by Becky Barber who is a student at the University of Plymouth.

Becky has visited Madagascar many times with her family over the years and has seen first hand the real need for education, communication and opportunities for people living in disadvantaged situations.  Bamboo is a sustainable resource because of it’s amazingly fast growing properties and is widely available in Madagascar.  Her design is a radio made nearly entirely from bamboo and powered by energy from the sun.  These radios could be produced by locals and sold for a profit internationally to benefit the people who made them.  They could also be used locally for remote villages to keep in contact with family members and aid providers.  The lines of communication could easily be opened with a design such as this which would make a huge difference in the lives of the people there!

Way to go Becky and keep up the great work!  I applaud everyone who is trying to come up with sustainable solutions for our world’s problems.  Sometimes necessity really can be the mother of invention!

Safety glasses are an absolute must for many work environments.  The use of safety glasses has prevented thousands and thousands of people from eye injuries and even the loss of an eye.  However, even the noble safety glasses can be “green-ed” up.

Check out this concept idea for a biodegradable, eco-friendly safety glass design using Fasal.  Fasal is a sustainable material that is made from wood and is also bio-degradable.  While these glasses are still just an idea (of Patrick Decker), they are a superb idea!

Currently on the market there are several varieties of safety glasses that are made of partially recycled plastics.  There are even more glasses that are able to be recycled.  Make sure that you look for the familiar arrow triangle on the glasses when purchasing.  This ensures that the glasses are able to be deposited at your local recycling depot easily.  Even some glasses that don’t have the symbol can be recycled by contacting the producer and seeing if they have a recycling or end of life program to reuse the glasses or any parts of them.  Even your safety routine can be green with a little research and the right purchases.

Drop of Water

It seems as though everyone is looking for diet pills that work.  However, diet pills aren’t really what a body needs to lose weight and we all know it.  These pills and supplements are full of things such as caffeine which are not great for the body although they may artificially increase energy in the short term.  In the long term, these products just won’t get you the results you’re after.  All they will do is waste precious resources and pump more chemicals into our systems and our planet.

So, how do you lose weight naturally??  It’s all got to start with water.  People are meant to drink much more water than we currently do.  Just regular plain old tap water in a reusable water bottle will do.  There’s absolutely no reason to buy bottled water.  In fact, all of these used plastic bottles are damaging our planet and using up resources that cannot be replaced.

Adults should drink 8-10 glasses of plain water a day to help maintain or achieve a healthy weight.  You really shouldn’t get thirsty at all.  That’s your body’s way of telling you that it is being deprived of water.  When I say “plain water”, I mean just that.  Not juice, not tea, not water sweetened with artificial products.  Just water, straight from the tap.  Most western countries have extremely clean drinking water coming directly into their home.

Try keeping a bottle (reusable of course) of water with you at all times and try to fill it at least 8 times throughout the day.  I guarantee you that you’ll feel and see a difference.  It will also help give you the added energy to put more exercise into your daily routine.  Remember that 30 minutes to 1 hour of daily activity is the recommended minimum.  It doesn’t need to happen all at once though.  Try 5 ten minute bursts.  Add in some fresh organic, local produce and you are on your way!

Handmade SoapOne of my absolutely favorite handmade products has got to be handmade soap.  There is just absolutely nothing like it!  Luckily, one of my favorite giveaway blogs, Today’s Diva, is giving away some all natural handmade soap.  The company that is sponsoring the giveaway is called Mountain Farms Soap.  They are a small company that hand crafts all natural skincare products such as soap.

They’ve got a huge variety of different kinds of soaps available — everything from Emu soap, Goat’s milk soap, gourmet soap and soap cakes are available.  Best of all, they are all made in the traditional way — coldpressed!  They are made in small batches to ensure top notch quality which is something that I really respect.  If you haven’t tried any traditional natural soap, I totally recommend that you try it.  You could even check out Today’s Diva’s blog and enter to win some for free!  I know I’m off to do that as I write this.  Wish me luck!!

Fat Burner Pill?

By Paula | Filed in fitness

Apidexin is the latest and greatest (?) diet pill on the market that claims to burn fat.  I’m not a big fan of people thinking that popping a pill is a good alternative to hard work, diet and exercise.  However, supplements such as this may actually really help in conjunction with the diet and exercise changes that are necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

This particular pill has 8 ingredients that include seaweed and raspberry extracts.  However, it also contains caffeine and some other ingredients that might not be suitable for all users.  It’s best to do your research before considering taking any of these types of things.  There are tons of apidexin reviews available online so that you can get other users take on the product’s effectiveness, side effects and overall safety.  However, the most important thing to do is to talk to your doctor.  Only your doctor can tell you whether this is a good fit for you personally.

The main thing that people who want to lose weight need to remember is that the amount of calories going out has to be greater than the amount of calories going in for weight loss to occur.  I know this sounds ridiculously simplistic but sometimes the truth is like that.  You cannot continue to overeat things that are not good for you if you expect to loose weight.  Overeating is not only bad for your physical body, it’s also bad for the well being of the planet.  Our natural resources are being fast depleted in Western countries by people becoming morbidly obese eating over processed food.  At the same time, people in other countries are literally starving to death.  It really makes no sense at all.

Fresh DillOh, June is finally here and that means that Canadian farmer’s markets are finally open!  I went on the weekend and got a ton of great stuff — baby potatoes, fresh dill and just about anything else I ran into.  That lead me to looking for a great recipe to make creamy dill potatoes.  Here’s what I made with my potatoes and dill — it’s easy, fresh and great for the environment to shop locally.

Ingredients:

2 lb bag of organic local baby potatoes

3 tbsp local organic dill

1/2 cup of cream

1 cup of milk (I used skim and it worked just fine)

1 tbsp of butter or margarine

1/4 cup of local organic white onion

1/4 cup of local organic chives (from my own garden)

Directions:

Rinse the potatoes to remove any loose dirt, luckily no need to worry about pesticides!  Do not peel the potatoes — there’s a ton of great vitamins in the skin.  Cut the potatoes into bite size chunks.  Put the potatoes into a pan and just cover the potatoes with water.  Set to boil for 15 minutes or until potatoes are soft with a fork (don’t overcook them though).  Strain off the water.  This can be saved for soup stock as well.  Put the potatoes back into the same pot.

Add the cream, milk, margarine and onion to the potatoes.  Bring this to a boil and then let it simmer until the sauce just begins to thicken.  Add the chives and dill and mix well.  Remove from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes or so until the sauce is to the consistency you desire.  Voila!  Fresh from the farm to your family.

Lemon JuiceAcne can causes scars that last a lifetime.  Luckily, it doesn’t have to.  You can have blemish free skin that is also scar free and all it takes is a little DIY elbow grease and some organic ingredients.  Unfortunately, many people are unaware of this and resort to expensive and chemical laden treatments to remove acne scars.  Even laser surgery is resorted to by many!  Anything that involves surgery definitely needs to be used as a last resort!  Try one of these 3 ideas instead:

1.  Lemon or Lime juice:  Squeeze some fresh organic lemon or lime juice onto a cotton ball.  Dab the juice onto any noticeable acne scars generously and let it sit for 2 to three minutes.  Rinse off with cool water and dab dry with a towel.  Do this daily for a couple of weeks at least to see if your scars start to diminish.

2.  Olive Oil:  That’s right — good old olive oil.  Use organic extra virgin olive oil for the best results for both your skin and the planet!  Massage the oil directly onto your entire face with your fingertips.  The olive oil will help to remove dead skin cells which is exactly what the acne scars are made of!

3.  Ginger Slices:  Cut up fresh organic ginger into slices.  Press a slice onto the acne scar that you are hoping to remove and leave it in place for 15 minutes or so.  This would probably be easiest to do while watching television so you don’t get toooo bored!  Do this to all effected areas of the face each night before bed and you should notice some significant results in one week.
